From the original project archiveThe context
Write for the visitor beyond the itinerary.
The archived brief describes a guide for incoming foreign diplomats and dignitaries, with an abridged version for visitors. A rough Korean text existed. The writing team was asked to bring cultural knowledge and an international reader’s perspective to the material.
An unfamiliar place needs more than a list of attractions. The recovered chapter spreads connect physical detail with history, atmosphere and ways of experiencing a neighborhood. They remain historical samples, not current travel advice.
The writing role. Writing the main sections of chapters and editing translated subsections, as described in the archive. This is a collaborative publication, not a claim of sole authorship or authorship of all translation.
A closer look at the craft
Find the point of entry
A chapter opening helps a visitor understand what kind of place they are entering before the practical and historical detail accumulates.
Keep local detail in the picture
The Bukchon spread moves between lanes, houses, workshops and everyday life. Specific details let the place carry the narrative.
Make the editorial role visible
Original chapter writing and editing of translated subsections are different tasks. Both belong in the account, alongside the wider publishing collaboration.
